What Is Cancer-Related Pain?

Cancer-related pain refers to pain that arises as a result of the cancer itself or its treatment. Many cancer patients experience pain at some point during their illness, and among those with advanced cancer, it is even more common. The pain can vary greatly in intensity and character depending on the type of cancer, its location, and the stage of the disease.

Cancer-related pain can be divided into several types. Tumor pain occurs when the cancerous tumor grows and presses on nearby tissues, nerves, bones, or organs. Bone metastases are a frequent cause of persistent, deep pain that may worsen with movement. Nerve compression pain occurs when the tumor presses on or invades nerves, leading to sharp, stabbing, or burning pain, often radiating to other areas.

In addition to the tumor itself, cancer treatment can also cause pain. Chemotherapy may lead to nerve damage and inflammation of the mucous membranes, while radiation therapy can cause tissue injury and inflammation. Surgeries sometimes leave chronic pain in the operated area. Some patients experience a combination of several pain types at the same time.

Cancer-related pain often has a significant impact on quality of life. Many experience sleep problems, fatigue, reduced appetite, and limitations in daily activities. It is therefore important to pay attention to the nature, location, and development of the pain to receive the appropriate help and support throughout the course of the illness.
